Nightmares, Wedding Crashers, and Serial Killers: Mid-Month Reading Update

Hi, loves! I actually had a different blog post scheduled to go up today, but I had this overwhelming urge to do a mid-month reading update post instead. šŸ˜‚ This is probably something Iā€™ll do on the blog every mid-month from now on (maybe)! Once a month seems too sparse, and every week seems too often (at least for me, since I only can only post once or twice a week right now).

If you guys want more semi-realtime reading updates from me, feel free to friend or follow me on Goodreads where Iā€™m super active! šŸ˜ŠšŸ’–

ANYWAY, here we go! May has been a major rollercoaster of reads for me so far. I absolutely ADORED 2 reads (4 & 4.5 stars!), but reaaally didnā€™t enjoy the other 3 reads (all 2 stars).

Books Iā€™ve Read

A Far Wilder Magic by Allison Saft
The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
  • Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig (āāāāĀ½): I absolutely LOVED this book (and was so surprised that I did)! I did a series review for this one and the first book, so please check that out if you havenā€™t yet. I hope I can convince you to read this duology. šŸ˜‰
  • An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir (āā): I really, really thought that I was going to love this one. I put it off for YEARS because I wanted to be in the perfect mood for it (and not at all because it was chunky and intimidatingā€¦). I might have enjoyed this more if I read it as a teenager.
  • Happily Never After by Lynn Painter (āā): The concept of the MCs being wedding crashers was fun at first, and the humor was okay, but towards the middle, the scenes just became incredibly repetitive, and I canā€™t even remember the MCsā€™ names. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø
Steelstriker by Marie Lu
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
  • The Mindf*ck Series by S.T. Abby (āā): This was my first shot at the dark romance genre that has apparently been getting super popular lately. It was unsurprisingly (and unfortunately) of poor quality. I weirdly had a lot of thoughts about this one, and I have a slightly lengthy review for this series scheduled to go up next week. My general thoughts are on my GR review, though, if you want a heads up.
  • Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young (āāāā): MY HEART. This was the most wholesome book Iā€™ve read in a while. The MCs were both sweet and charming, and they had a glorious romance full of mutual pining. Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™ll write a full review for this one, but general thoughts are also here on my GR review. šŸ˜Š

Books Iā€™m Currently Reading

Kiss the Sky by Krista Ritchie and Becca Ritchie

Iā€™m in the middle of (as of writing this post) Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater. I was just in the mood for a light romantasy because thereā€™s still remnants of the Mindf*ck insanity in my brain. šŸ˜‚ Also, itā€™s been so long since Iā€™ve read a Fae book that I really lovedā€¦ the last time might have been the Iron Fey books way back in 2011 (which I need to reread to see if I still like them). šŸ˜

So far, itā€™s giving Emily Wilde but for people with shorter attention spans (AKA me), which is nice. Nothing particularly amazing so far, but enjoyable.

Books I Plan to Read

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
  • The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang: Iā€™ve been meaning to read for years now! I posted a poll on GR asking my friends to *gently* pressure me into reading something Iā€™m intimidated to read, and The Poppy War won!
  • Ten Thousand Stitches by Olivia Atwater: Iā€™m liking Half a Soul well enough, so I might just read the sequel when I finish The Poppy War. Or will I end up reading the sequels to The Poppy War instead? We shall see!
  • Flawless by Elsie Silver / Binding 13 by Chloe Walsh: Iā€™m definitely going to want a contemporary romance after all the fantasies, so weā€™ll see what romance read Iā€™ll be in the mood forā€¦ Iā€™m thinking Flawless or Binding 13. Let me know in the comments if youā€™ve read any of these!

Letā€™s chat!

Any books on here that youā€™ve read or want to read? Do you like to constantly switch genres when reading books, or can you go 5 books in a row of all the same genre?

Iā€™m sorry An Ember In The Ashes didnā€™t work for you. I only got to it last year but still loved it. Although I do get where youā€™re coming from with some books being more enjoyable when your younger. Iā€™ve read a couple where Iā€™ve wondered if that would be the case recently. I hope youā€™re finding more enjoyable reads for the rest of MayšŸ¤ž

I also have Poppy War on my TBR still although itā€™s dropped down it. Maybe if you enjoy it itā€™ll reignite my excitement.

Oh and I loved the Iron Fey books. Although like you itā€™s been a while since I read them.

Love this little update! Iā€™m sorry you didnā€™t love an Ember in the Ashes, sometimes I feel like we get to books too late and our younger selves would have fallen for these stories, more, I completely agree!
Out on a Limb sounds so lovely, so happy you enjoyed it!!

Iā€™ve been meaning to read An Ember In The Ashes for years now, but somehow I never doā€¦ Looks like I shouldnā€™t be in too much of a hurry after all. šŸ˜‰ I think this book might have worked 5+ years ago back when I still read a lot of YA, but Iā€™m not sure it would be a good fit anymore. I hope you will enjoy whatever you read next!

I too was disappointed by An Ember in the Ashes. I didnā€™t hate it but I didnā€™t love it either.

I still need to read Two Twisted Crowns so Iā€™m glad to see that got a good review!!

Out on a Limb looks like a good one. My daughter read the Twisted Crowns duology and loved it, too. Have a wonderful week!

I keep hearing good things about Two Twisted Crowns, it makes me so curious!

OMG! When Bo started crying, I started crying. That was just one of many beautiful moments in that book. Happy to hear you enjoyed it.

  12. Greg Avatar

I think Twisted crowns sounds great! Just went over to Goodreads to check it out.

  13. Cindy Davis Avatar

Itā€™s hard when a book is so anticipated and then not as good as you hoped it would be! I hope you have a great week!

  14. Lisa @TenaciousReader Avatar

An Ember in Ashes was one that I thought for sure I would want to read, but I saw some negative reviews like yours and put it off. I may need to read the Rachel Gillig duology though, Iā€™ve seen a number of people post positive reactions to it

Thatā€™s definitely not a good sign when you canā€™t remember the MCā€™s name. Glad you did enjoy some of the books you read. Have a great week. šŸ™‚

Sorry to see you encountered a couple of duds this week. Glad you enjoyed Out on a Limb, though. That one is already on my TBR. I keep seeing raves for it!

I did not like Half a Soul all that much, but just about everyone I know that read it did, so it might just be me? In any case, I love the variety of books youā€™re reading so far this monthšŸ˜

For the most part I stick to the same genre but if a book sounds good Iā€™ll read it. I love paranormal romance so thatā€™s what I mostly read.

I really enjoyed half a soul! Glad youā€™re enjoying it. Iā€™m so keen to read Rachel gillig as well!! I had the exact same experience with ember in the ashes- I so wanted to enjoy it and I didnā€™t!! Great reviews!

Disappointed to hear you didnā€™t enjoy An Ember in the Ashes. Iā€™ve put it off for a long time, too, because I want to be in the right moodā€¦ and now Iā€™m wondering if I might not be the right audience anymore. Iā€™m going to give it a shot eventually, but weā€™ll see.

Iā€™m sorry your reading during the first half of the month has been disappointing. Letā€™s hope the last half is better!

  22. Hannah Avatar

Out on a limb sounds charming šŸ˜ and Half a Soul was lovely ā€“ I really enjoyed it and you nailed the shorter attention span bit šŸ˜‚ that is also me. It suited me so well haha

  23. Ellie Warren Avatar

Frequency of updates is hard to get right which is why I now have a ā€œnot-weekly check-inā€. I used to do monthly, changed it to weekly, then failed to do it every week. I enjoyed Half a Soul but havenā€™t got round to getting hold of the other books in the series yet.

  24. Rebecca Avatar

I like to genre hop, especially if I am reading more than one book at a time. Like Iā€™ve currently got a contemp audiobook going (Summers at the Saint), and probably going to start a romantasy in print, or a historical romance. Still debating šŸ˜‚ If I read too many of the same in close order, especially thriller/mysteries, they get too jumbled šŸ¤Ŗ

Out on a limb is on my tbr and youā€™ve made me really want to get it! Iā€™ve started Binding 13 and itā€™s really good so far, hope you enjoy all of your current reads āœØļøšŸ“š

Iā€™m sorry you didnā€™t enjoy An Ember in the Ashes. It is one of my favorite series! I am happy to see you enjoyed Two Twisted Crowns! I thought it was such a great conclusion!
