Chunky Fantasies and Romance Books (June Mid-Month Reading Update)

Hi, loves! 💖 The first half of June flew by so fast. I can’t believe we’re already halfway through the month. Mentally, I’m still stuck in May. 😭 Anyway, it’s time for another mid-month reading update!

I knew I had a few heavy fantasy books planned this month, so my strategy was to go through them slowly, and to fit in some contemporary romance books in between to help the possible brainrot. 😂 It’s been working out so far!

What I’ve Read

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
In a Jam by Kate Canterbary
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
  • Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (⭐): I’m sorry everyone, but I absolutely hated this book. I literally have NOTHING good to say about it. 😭 I’m currently in the middle of drafting my review, and it’s going to be a long one. If you enjoyed this, I advise you to stay away from my review because I will be trashing this. 😂
  • In a Jam by Kate Canterbary (⭐⭐⭐): Because BookTok books and I clearly don’t get along, I looked to Reddit for more specific recommendations. I’m not the biggest fan of small-town romances, but this book featured a bunch of my favorite romance tropes (second chance, friends to lovers, single parent/guardian), so I had to give it a go. I enjoyed it for the most part, though the first half was better than the last.
  • The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐): I’ve been so intimidated to read this book for the longest time and was shocked by how engrossed I was in it. I read this for the Can you read a series in a month? book challenge.
Forget Me Not by Julie Soto
The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin
  • Forget Me Not by Julie Soto (⭐⭐⭐½): Like I said, second chance is one of my favorite tropes and I’ve really been craving it lately! This one wasn’t anything unique and it honestly felt slightly shallow, but it was a quick and charming read nonetheless, and I loved Elliot. 💖
  • The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin (⭐⭐⭐⭐): I’m 2/3 books done with my Can you read a series in a month? book challenge entry with this one! Still really good, and this one even made me cry. Slightly scared to finally finish the series!

What I’m Currently Reading

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen

I don’t typically gravitate towards cozy fantasies, but I’ve been hearing nothing but amazing things about The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen, so I decided to give it a shot. I’m not far enough in to have any thoughts yet, but from what I’ve read, there is this sexual attraction mixed in with the hatred between the two MCs, and I’m into it. 😉

What I Plan to Read

The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin
A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall
Powerless by Lauren Roberts
  • The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin: I AM SO SCARED FOR THIS TRILOGY TO END. But thank you Jemisin for writing one of my new favorite series. 😊💞
  • A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall: Caro made this book sound so good. It’s queer and it’s a historical romance, which is a genre I keep saying I need to get into (outside of fantasy)!
  • Powerless by Lauren Roberts: This is a thick one, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get to it, but I’ll see if I’m in the mood! And I know, I know, it’s another popular BookTok book, but I genuinely can’t tell if I’m going to like it or not, so let’s hope for the best. Also, I signed up for the 10 books of summer challenge with this book, so I’m going to have to read it at some point this summer. 😂

Let’s chat!

Any books on here that you’ve read or want to read? Do you like to constantly switch genres when reading books, or can you go 5 books in a row of all the same genre?

The Fourth Wing is on my TBR and I’m really excited about it so I think I’ll avoid your thoughts on it for now. I’ll remember your dislike though and if I’m let down by it check out your review then 😂 I’m sorry that it didn’t work for you though. Hart & Mercy is on my TBR but I have no clue when I’ll get to it. I hope you enjoy it though.

Ooh I’ve wanted to read Fifth Season for years now and I’m thrilled that you’re loving it so far. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the finale works for you. I’ve recently tried to make a mini TBR of high priority unowned reads and that’s definitely one of them so hopefully I’ll get to it fairly soon as well.

Powerless is on my TBR too but I didn’t know it was thick. I guess that’s what happens when you get a lot of ebooks 😂 anyway I hope you enjoy the books on your current TBR and that the series finale is a hit with you.

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy really took me by surprise. I didn’t know that it would touch me so much. I hope you enjoy the rest of the book. The Fifth Season is one of those mind-altering books. I definitely like to change things up when it comes to genres. This is easier when you are into a lot of different kinds of books.

Sorry to see that Fourth Wing didn’t work for you but I truly believe that not every book is for every reader. I mean, how likely is it that an author could write a book that would appeal to everyone? There have been some hugely popular books that I didn’t like at all, so I get it. I love Alexis Hall but have not read one of their historical books yet. Hope you’ll love it!

Haha I did enjoy Fourth Wing but I AM definitely looking forward to your review 🙂 I also loved The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy so I do hope you’ll love that one too!

LOL, is it weird that I’m looking forward to your review of Fourth Wing?

I loved Fourth Wing but absolutely hated Iron Flame. I will not be continuing with the series.

Your May comment cracked me up. I own Fifth Season, I should read that. I enjoyed Fourth Wing so I’ll skip your review…lol

Mentally I’m also still stuck in May! I’ll try to keep an eye out for your FOURTH WING review. It wasn’t a 5-star read for me, but neither was it a 1-star one. I think I gave it a 4? I found it entertaining enough, but I’m not ~obsessed~ with it. Can’t wait to see why you’ll trash it haha.

Oh boy, that doesn’t bode well for The Fourth Wing. I’ve been meaning to read it because dragons, but now I’m worried haha. I’ve also been so curious about The Undertaking Of Hart And Mercy! I keep hearing great things.

  12. Rebecca Avatar

I loved Fourth Wing when I finally picked it up, but can see how it’s not for everyone. Very much looking forward to your review! lol
Also have Hart & Mercy on my TBR {or you know, my literal bookshelf}, and keep hearing mixed reviews … must pick it up one of these days

i am looking forward to your fourth wing review, as a fellow hater of the book! i hope you’re prepared for the anguish in the stone sky!! I hope you love the book hehe

  14. Abi @ Scribbles & Stories Avatar

I’m so interested to see your thoughts on Fourth Wing 😂 I’ve been very wary of it (as I am with all overhyped books) so I haven’t touched it yet myself. There’s just something so fun about reading a rant for something you’ve never even read 😂

I can usually read a few books in one genre (especially if they’re a series) then I’ll swap to another genre for a few. But sometimes I have a month where I’m all over the place and every book is completely different 🤷‍♀️

Best of luck for the rest of June! 💖

Time really is flying. I can’t believe it’s the third week of June already. I usually stick to my usual genres but once in a while I like to take a break and read something else. Enjoy your books!

Oh gosh, you are right!! We passed the middle of June and for me it has barely started! 😱 Time flying aside it seems like your reading month is going great!! I hope that the rest of the month will keep up with the trend!

Smiling that you hated Fourth Wing. I loved it but every book is not for every reader.

Ohhhh I can’t wait to see your thoughts about Fourth Wing! I have THOUGHTSSSSSS. Actually you know what maybe I’ll just run over to your DMs LOL. I actually did like it, but not as much as everyone else did? (Not surprising, since I tend to have a hit or miss with BookTok hyped books.) I feel like I just picked it up at the right time and in the right mood because hoo-boy, the sequel was not really it. 😪

  20. Jodie | That Happy Reader Avatar

I am absolutely loving Forget Me Not and will finish it soon! I’m sorry it was a bit of a disappointment for you.

I still need to read Fourth Wing. Had hoped to fit it in as one of my Beat the Backlist books earlier this year, but maybe this summer. I enjoyed In a Jam, but I can see what you’re saying about the first and second half of it. I love Megan Bannen’s YA books, but I could not get into this one which made me sad as much love as it was getting! Glad your plan for reading this month is working!

    1. buffywnabe Avatar

Oh, I also wanted to say that I sometimes need a break between genres too, while I can do a bunch of romance in a row, sometimes I have to break it up with something else.

BAHAHAHAHA I’m eagerly anticipating your fourth wing review, it looked so corny to me skdjfhksdjf
and I’m so glad you loved the fifth season?? mind-blowing, isn’t it?? hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
